Why squirrels move in during the fall
Squirrels are looking for two things in September and October: a warm, dry place to den for winter, and a place to raise the second litter of the year. An attic offers both. Why do it yourself fixes make it worse

A homeowner saw the hole, waited until the noise stopped for an afternoon, and stuffed it with steel wool or screwed a board over it. Two things go wrong. If the squirrel was inside, it is now sealed in and will chew through a soffit, a vent, or drywall to get out, and the damage is worse than the original hole. If the squirrel was outside, it opens the same spot again because it is easier than finding a new one, and the board becomes a sign that this house has an attic worth getting into. Removal has to confirm the animal is out before the sealing happens, and the sealing has to cover every weak point on the roofline, not just the one that was found.
