Short answer: the only consistently effective mole control is trapping in active runs, done by someone who can tell an active run from an abandoned one. Grub treatments, sonic spikes, castor oil sprays and home remedies have a poor track record because they target the wrong thing or nothing at all.

Why do moles show up in Indianapolis lawns?
Moles are insectivores. They are in your yard because there is food in your soil, and the food is primarily earthworms. Grubs are on the menu but they are a smaller share of the diet than most people believe.
Central Indiana lawns are close to ideal habitat. The soil holds moisture, irrigated turf keeps worms near the surface through dry stretches, and established neighborhoods have deep organic layers built up over decades. A well-maintained lawn is more attractive to moles than a neglected one, which is the frustrating irony of the whole situation.
You typically notice them in spring and fall when soil moisture pushes activity toward the surface, and again after summer rain following a dry spell.
Why do grub treatments usually fail?
This is the most common piece of advice homeowners receive and it is largely wrong.
Applying insecticide for grubs does two things. It may reduce grub population, which removes part of the diet. It does not remove earthworms, which are the primary food source. So the mole keeps tunneling, now covering more ground because the buffet got smaller.
There is also a timing problem. Grub controls are effective in a fairly narrow window tied to the life cycle of the beetle, and applications outside that window accomplish very little regardless of the mole question.
If you have a genuine grub problem, treat it because of the grubs and the turf damage they cause. Do not expect it to solve a mole problem.
What about repellents, sonic spikes and home remedies?
The short version, based on running these properties afterward:
- Sonic and vibrating stakes. Moles habituate to steady vibration quickly. Yards with stakes installed generally show the same tunneling patterns as yards without them, sometimes with the runs simply routed a few feet further out.
- Castor oil products. These have the most plausible mechanism of the bunch, making soil and prey less palatable. Results in practice are inconsistent and short lived, and they typically push activity to an untreated part of the yard rather than off the property.
- Flooding the tunnels. Tunnel networks are extensive and water finds the path of least resistance. You will saturate a section of lawn and the mole will use a different corridor.
- Gum, mothballs, broken glass and the rest. No. Some of it is also genuinely bad for pets, children and soil.
- Poison baits shaped like worms. These have a narrow set of conditions where they work and a wide set where they do not, and they introduce real risk to pets and non-target wildlife. We do not recommend them for residential yards.
What does effective mole trapping involve?
Trapping works, but only when it is done in the right place, and finding the right place is most of the skill.
A yard with mole activity has two kinds of tunnels. Surface feeding runs are the raised ridges you see, and most of them are used once and abandoned. Main travel runs are deeper corridors connecting foraging areas to the nest, and the mole uses these repeatedly, often daily.
Traps set in abandoned feeding runs catch nothing. That is the single reason most homeowner trapping attempts fail, and it is why buying a trap at the hardware store so often ends in frustration.
The process we use is straightforward but it takes experience to execute:
- Walk the property and map the tunnel network, distinguishing feeding runs from travel corridors by depth, straightness and how they connect features of the yard.
- Test activity by collapsing sections of suspected main runs and checking which ones get repaired. A repaired run is a used run.
- Set traps in confirmed active travel runs, seated properly in the tunnel so the trigger sits in the mole's path.
- Monitor and reset, adjusting placement as the map of activity becomes clearer.
How many moles are actually in my yard?
Fewer than the damage suggests. Moles are solitary and territorial, and a single animal can produce a startling amount of surface tunneling across a large lawn. Many properties with heavy visible damage hold one to three animals.
This is good news. It means resolution is achievable rather than endless, and it means anyone quoting you an ongoing monthly mole program for a typical residential lot is selling a subscription rather than a solution.
Will they come back?
Possibly, and honesty matters here. Removing the moles present does not change the fact that your soil holds worms and your neighborhood holds moles. Reinvasion from an adjacent property is common, particularly where yards back up to fields, wooded edges or creek corridors.
What you can reasonably expect is a resolved problem now and a longer interval before the next one, not a permanent guarantee. Any company promising your yard will never see another mole is not being straight with you.
What about the lawn damage?
Surface ridges can usually be pressed back down with a roller or simply walked flat once activity stops, and the turf recovers. Deeper damage where runs have dried out and killed root systems may need overseeding. We recommend waiting until trapping is complete before repairing, because repairing an active yard just means doing it twice.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as voles? No, and the difference matters. Moles tunnel and eat insects and worms. Voles are rodents that eat plant material and use surface runways through grass, and they damage roots, bulbs and young trees. The control approaches are different. We identify which one you have before proposing anything.
How long does it take? Most residential properties resolve within a couple of weeks of active trapping. Large lots and properties with ongoing pressure from adjacent land take longer.

Do you handle other wildlife? Yes. Raccoons, squirrels, groundhogs, skunks, beavers, dead animal removal and exclusion work are all part of what we do. Bat work follows Indiana's maternity season restrictions, which run from mid May through mid August, and we schedule that work accordingly rather than doing anything that would strand pups inside a structure.
